Chlorhexidine is a disinfectant which is effective against a wide range of vegetative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

It is ineffective against acid-fast bacteria, bacterial spores, fungi and viruses. It is more active against Gram-ositive than Gram-negative bacteria, and some species of Pseudomonas and Proteus are relatively less susceptible. Chlorhexidine is most active at a neutral or slightly alkaline pH and its activity is reduced by blood and other organic matter.

Ethanol 70% has bactericidal actions against most vegetative organisms. It is not effective against viruses and spores. It acts relatively quickly to denature cellular proteins of microorganisms and lower their surface tension, thus facilitating their removal. It also has useful solvent properties and will dissolve many water-insoluble substances including sebum.

Contraindications

Known sensitivity to chlorhexidine. Do not use on broken skin.

Directions for Use:

Pre-clean surfaces first. Use undiluted. Do not mix with detergents or other chemicals. Do not return unused solution to the bottle. Do not use to disinfect therapeutic devices. Do not use to disinfect surfaces likely to come in contact with broken skin.

Precautions

Not to be taken. Not for injection. Not for internal use. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth. • Avoid pooling on surfaces. • Do not use near a naked flame or other ignition source.

First Aid

If swallowed, drink plenty of water. For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre (phone Australia 13 11 26) or a doctor. If in eyes, hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water. Continue flushing until advised to stop by the Poisons Information Centre, a doctor or for at least 15 minutes.
